Islamic Parenting

Nurturing children in faith and family responsibility

Children are a trust from Allah. Their upbringing in faith is among the foremost duties of parents. Cultivating the habits of Qur’an, prayer and good character from an early age builds the foundation for their future.

Qur’an

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا

O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire…
— Surah At-Tahrim, 66:6
Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْؤولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ… وَالرَّجُلُ رَاعٍ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَهُوَ مَسْؤولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ

Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock… a man is a shepherd over his family and is responsible for his flock.
— Sahih al-Bukhari: 893; Sahih Muslim: 1829

Insights and practical principles

1

Be the example

Children learn more from what they see than from what they hear. The parents’ own practice is the first lesson.

2

The habit of prayer

Accustoming children to prayer from an early age - with patience and encouragement rather than harshness.

3

A bond with the Qur’an

A short daily period of recitation and learning the meaning leaves a lasting impression on a child’s heart.

4

Character and manners

Truthfulness, trustworthiness, respect for elders and kindness to the young - manners must be taught alongside knowledge.

5

Patience and supplication

Upbringing is a long process. Strive with patience and never cease supplicating for your children.
